Minghsin University of Science and Technology hosts 16 American educators associated with Fulbright Taiwan.
International Education Administrators from 16 American universities organized by the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan) attended the Semiconductor International Education Exchange Conference held at Minghsin University of Science and Technology on Monday.
The annual event shares Taiwan's chip expertise through international exchange, training, and simulated semiconductor lab conditions. MUST operates semiconductor facilities such as packaging and testing labs to teach students and give them insight into the day-to-day operations of the chip industry.
Fulbright Taiwan hosts an International Education Administrators Award program, providing international educators with a two-week funded seminar to learn about overseas education practices. In addition to learning more about semiconductors, many were interested in Mandarin instruction.
US participants included educators from University of Southern California, University of Northern Iowa, and University of Texas at Austin. Several distinguished educators from Taiwan also participated in the event, such as National Tsing Hua University's Vice President for Global Affairs Peng Shin-yi (彭心儀) and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Vice President of International Affairs Hsu Wen-syang (徐文祥).
The US delegation learned about Taiwan's tech industry and the IT higher education system. Academic exchange within the semiconductor field has involved Taiwanese and American universities for many years. The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange has frequently recommended Taiwan as a first choice for study in technology-related fields.
In his opening speech, MUST President Lu Ming-feng (呂明峯) said the university is committed to cultivating semiconductor talent and promoting Taiwan's technology and educational resources through international exchange. Through such exchange, academic and industrial cooperation with American universities can be deepened with both sides benefitting.
Fulbright Taiwan Executive Director Dr. Randall Nadeau said his organization has proudly supported scholarly exchange between the US and Taiwan for many years. The foundation encourages US universities to consider Taiwan as a preferred location for short-term study and student exchange.
Representatives from US universities expressed great interest in Taiwan not only as a base for the study of technology but also for Mandarin language study. Many US universities are looking for alternatives to China for language education following the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the conference, representatives from Minghsin University of Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University made presentations about their respective technology and semiconductor education programs. There was also a discussion about cross-cultural learning models where young American students could learn about technology and Mandarin in line with current industry trends.
Before this conference, MUST President Lu led a delegation to visit Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) for an exchange visit from March 13-14. The delegation participated in the Semiconductor Advanced Packaging Forum held at the university.
While attending the forum, a memorandum of understanding in the field of semiconductor talent training was signed between the two sides. The agreement further underscores MUST’s commitment to international academic exchange and a growing network of international partners.
Through international exchanges, MUST has demonstrated its leading role in semiconductor education and a willingness to undertake international academic cooperation and support Mandarin education. In the future, it will strengthen such international links to promote the two-way flow of global talent and create a more competitive learning and industrial environment.
